At my work biking and bikes come up in conversation quite often. Some of my co-workers are into it like me, although probably most of the time some kind of biking related topic starts with me.

Early last week I brought up that I am always wondering how many people at our office (500+ people) have nice vintage bikes that are hanging from their garage ceiling and never used.

I asked how can I let people know that if they want to make space and get rid of their bike(s) I would be happy to take it of their hands? All of a sudden opportunity struck. One of my co-workers who usually doesn’t sit with us tells me that he has a mint 1974 Champaign Raleigh International in storage.

When I heard that I wanted to know all about the Raleigh. The bike includes all original parts except for the saddle and the brakes. The saddle was replaced by a non-leather version, since he did not like the comfort of a Brooks saddle. The Weinmann brakes were replaced by long reach Campy’s since he liked them better.

Due to health issues he can no longer ride it so he has been thinking about selling it. When he sensed my enthusiasm he offered it to me. I was honest and told him I cannot possibly pay market value. He said he has not sold it, because he wants to know it goes to a good home. Of course I was thrilled. I have never even seen the bike, but it sounded too good to be true.

After some going back and forth he said he wants $200 for the bike plus a box of extra parts and tools.

I told him I would think about it, only because even though it is not a lot of money things have been tight and with a lot of house expenses coming up I would have to convince my spouse that I have to have this bike.

My question is; would you risk agonizing your partner for a deal like this? Does anybody have any advise what I should say?
