Complain nicely to the local streets department and ask them to adjust the sensitivity of their sensors. The story I hear is that all the traffic detector electronics boxes that have been on the market for the last couple of decades can be set high enough to detect bicycles and motorcycles (motorcycles are not much easier to detect and they too benefit greatly from positioning themselves properly over the detector wires). Crews in California and other progressive states carry a bicycle rim with them when they adjust the sensitivity of the detectors. If it will detect the rim it should detect bicycles and motorcycles. If not they need to adjust it higher. Then they need to paint the streets to show where a bike should park. Illinois may be somewhat good about getting the sensitivity right, Illinois never marks the locations and hides the wires under featureless asphalt as often as they can.
