Clipless Etiquette Question

I was on a long hot (mid 90's) solo ride today, when suddenly I found myself with 2 empty Camelback Podiums. I decided to stop at a convenience store and find some fluids. I parked my bike outside, took off my helmet and went inside. As you can imagine my shoes clicked and clacked on the cheap tiles. I gave a look to the store owner, he was busy looking at my shoes, when he looked up, I gave him my best HTFU look and continued about my business.

This was my first time going in a store on a ride, much less with cleats on. Is it normal to walk in with cleats on, or must I bring along cleat covers or something? What do you guys do?
