Fundamentally, one strap will be more uncomfortable than two, there's simply no way around it. Assymetry is neat-looking though, that I will say. Thus, it's all about fashion.
Does that mean 2 straps are more uncomfortable than 10? How many straps do you have on that state-sponsored fashionable jacket?
Messenger bags make a lot of sense for the rest of us, yourself included in certain cases. Why so critical of people's bag choice. Maybe if you stopped trying to put a square peg in a round hole with your baggage choices you'd be happier.
