Not true at all. I also live in SC. Take it downtown to Bike Shop Santa Cruz and have them take a look at it. Good people WILL be there. Check there site out fixedgearfreaks.com. You could also take it to the Bike Church where a volunteer can help you take a look at it and teach you for free. Good luck
