A good bike shop will be able to set up a MTB derailleur with your shifters - they should be able to install a special pulley that adjusts the cable pull if needed. Sharp Bicycles in Lafayette did exactly that for a friend who was looking to put on a bigger cassette for the Climb to Kaiser.
