I've been riding a hybrid with an upright handlebar for years. I did a century on a Bianchi hybrid and have ridden up to 2000 miles a year on a hybrid. The thing that struck me after the century was that I was painfree the next morning due to the comfort of the bike.

A few years ago I switched to a road bike with the goal of going farther with less effort, not going faster. It did take less effort to go the miles. But my yearly mileage fell drastically because the comfort was a lot less than with my hybrids.

Recently I switched back to a hybrid again and am glad I did. Not going as fast as on the road bike, but I'm riding more often and farther.

Really a matter of personal comfort and how you body adapts to the frame geometry and set up of each type of bike.
