Depends on the ride and your own personal choice but if you wan't energy on a ride- eat anything you want. It's just that you have to like it.
My long ride snacks are Fruit cake- Dried fruit-Cereal bars- fig Newtons- and a bit of cheese for protein. I have tried the energy bar and don't like them. Constituency of cardboard and definitley not to my taste. Best out of the lot is a good helping of Porridge before the ride and a top up of Pie during the ride. I like both.
