Three years (2007) ago I was riding a steel bike that weighed about 25 pounds and I weighed about 210. In rides that involved any kind of climbing at all I was easily dumped by my friends. In 2008 I bought a Serotta Fierte' Ti. It weighs 21 pounds. I was still easily dumped by my friends, but as they passed me they would tell me how nice my bike was.
This year I lost 40 pounds going from 210 to 170, and I wait at the top of the hills for my friends to catch up.
Weight is important. Look to reduce the pounds and don't worry so much about the ounces.
