There isn't any reason not to upgrade/modify it as you see fit. I paid $12 for one with nice aero brake levers to give to my sister after her bike was stolen. It was pretty heavy, and everything was pretty low-end. For all I know, her ex-fiance is still riding it some 6 years later. On a bike like this, originality is very unimportant.
