As Valerian said, I'm guessing the cause of the accident was out of saddle technique. A lot of new riders seem to thrash the bike from side to side trying to imitate the pros. It's very easy for your tires to lose traction under these conditions.

Also, I realize you already admitted your fault on the helmet - I must repeat: Never ride a bike without a helmet. Even if it's just a quick spin around the neighborhood. Also, never ride your bike without gloves. Road rash on your palm isn't fun.

Glad you made it out without any serious injuries.
