So I've put another 700-800 miles on the Custom Nuevo's since I last posted. Today, I sheared the spindle on the Custom Nuevo pedal right side. Coming out of a turn, I hit the gas and punched it only to find myself looking up at the sky. Looking around and making sure my parts were intact, I checked out the bike. Hmm.. Bummer I thought. Down on my right foot, a perfectly "foot retention" example of a Custom Nuevo with double straps and toe clip. The axle spindle sheared (CRMO steel) almost perfectly flat. There's just a nub on the crankset. The spindle broke within the pedal, about 1/2" inside from the pedal exterior.
I'm disappointed, but came out with small cyclist road rash and wore a helmet!
But now Im debating on getting a replacement spindle kit for $50 or a whole new pedal set for $150. I need a pedal that allows for TWIN SINGLE straps so four holes in the pedal body (eliminates RX-1, White Industries, etc.). I also looked at cheaper pedals like the Sylvan Track, Stream, Prime, but they just look...cheap.
Any input? I'm more bummed that I have to ride my big 29er single speed back up beater while I sort out the pedal replacement.
