If you have an old MTB sitting in the garage, use that. My commuter is an old Stumpjumper converted to commuter duty. If you're buying new; I'd go with a mid-range aluminum MTB, swap out the knobbies for a set of semi or full slicks. Ride it until the components wear out, then replace with something lighter.
