I think that your example is a good example of how non racers might see this. If I'm following a bigger vehicle, which is blocking my vision, down the expressway at normal speed, I have a lot better chance of avoiding an accident should that vehicle swerve around something in front of him. And, I'm much more likely to put more distance between us in anticipation of something going wrong, being blind to the road ahead.


Now, if I'm following that vehicle at 90, right up his ass, and he swerves, I'm not going to come out as well.

I think it comes down to the fact that you guys that race put yourselves into a situation that many of us find moronic, yet can't comprehend why we can see the fault in your behavior. So to me, once you chose to be in that position, you own full responsibility for running into someone.

That being said, I can see the possible advantage of wearing a base layer in case of a crash. I can also think of reasons to not wear one. To each their own.
