I think it comes down to the fact that you guys that race put yourselves into a situation that many of us find moronic, yet can't comprehend why we can see the fault in your behavior. So to me, once you chose to be in that position, you own full responsibility for running into someone.

That being said, I can see the possible advantage of wearing a base layer in case of a crash. I can also think of reasons to not wear one. To each their own.
I think most bike racers would agree that we put ourselves in moronic situations (or at least what most people would consider moronic positions. But most of us also accept that the risk is that something like this crash happens and obviously the risk/reward is worth it to us.

That's kind of the point umd is making against people laying sole blame on him. I'm very much in the sh1t happens camp.
