Actually, I've always found the DL-1 surprisingly fast. Between the big wheels and the AW the gearing is pretty high, and it's really not as heavy as people think; compared to an American middleweight (or even a modern beach cruiser), it really is a lightweight. So while it'll never be fast in the same way a road bike will, in comparison to other upright town bikes (including modern ones like the Breezer with 26" wheels) I think it's actually one of the fastest out there (on flat ground, mind you). It's like an old Cadillac -- you wouldn't put it up against a Ferrari, but in its class it pretty much owns. Y'know? For me, the DL-1 is actually an efficient and speedy way to get to work on time (as long as it's not raining).

Anyway, my point is that tires do seem to make a difference and the Schwalbes are grabbier than I'd like. Has anyone found any others that feel faster?
I'm with you, the DL-1 was much faster than I thought it would be. Not that its fast, I just imagined a lead sled that never topped 5mph no matter how hard you pedal. A lot of heavy bikes are dubbed as "Cadillacs", the DL-1 is an Escalade.
