I decided to do some standing on the small hills yesterday. I've stood before, but only short times going slow. Well yesterday, I stood as soon as I hit the hill and blew up them. But, after a few, my back hurt. That could have been from standing on a hard floor for so many hours beforehand though. I hope so, it's a lot more fun cranking up the hills, but not at the expense of a sore back.
Are you working on your core? I had the same problem until I started yoga. Now after 6 months, it is far easier to stand or stay in the drops. I used to hate the wind (which sucks if you live in OK like I do) until I could get a little more aero. That was all core stabilization.
