I haven't tried the bike specific cremes, but have used Udderrly Smooth, a product originally developed for cow udders, but now sold as a skin cream. I got it at Wal Mart.

I applied it to the shorts, especially on the seams, as well as to myself, just to make sure it got to the right places!
