Bikes: Trek 820 mtb, A no name red steel pipe bike, my commuter

Ok, I enjoy the heat, and I seem to breathe fine. The air quality is bad, and my doctor cautions me not to ride in it, because of the concentration of particulate matter. Outside of being sick or injured has anyone figured out how to stop commuting on a bicycle? While camping several time this year in the heat, there were advisories posted at rivers and lakes about high bacteria levels. Being an outdoor person is getting to be very difficult.
