For the chain I use the plastic chain cleaner with diluted "Greased Lightening" that we buy in a gallon jug. I use regular chain lube. It isn't that expensive and works.
For cleaning, I use windshield washer fluid and an old towel. When one of the MTBs gets really dirty it will get hosed off but usually that isn't necessary.
