Unfortunately, poor planning and execution on the part of certain mass transit agencies is the reason that a lot of people who would like to use it more still have a car in the driveway. Since they have to maintain insurance and registration on the car whether they use it or not, they use it more than they should need to. (I'm thinking specifically of DART (Dallas) and their lack of late-night service among other problems. I could have used DART and a bike to commute to an evening shift job in Irving if they'd just kept the rail running to South Irving Station after 11:30PM. As it was, I had to drive the 15 miles rather than bike 3-4 and ride the rest.)
DART is going broke. Granted for many reasons, but one significant reason is that it (like most transit systems) has never been able to operate without subsidies. They can't charge enough to cover operating costs, because if they did people wouldn't ride. So you end up with things like reduced schedules.

Curious how could DART have helped you in Stephenville? Thats what 90 miles southwest of Fort Worth? Didn't Irving opt out of the DART funding program?
