Very cool build!

I tried that approach with that style of pad holders - trimmed down a Koolstop pad to fit and bent the end tabs out so I could insert the pad and then crimped them back in. It worked for a while but do keep an eye on them - one of mine worked loose over time (not in a bad way, but you never know.) I eventually replacing them with an unmodified Koolstop pad/post (Eagle IIs, I think.)
