Thank you. After staying up until 3:00 am last night and reading your suggestions today, I took it into a LBS (along with another "bike" which my 9-yr-old son has been using for parts). They were able to swap out the crank set for only $25!! Yeah! The tech said that the set was "toast". I guess the crank is one in which some machine pressure attaches the crank to the round thingy with the teeth on it. And, somehow the two had separated and were unfixable (undoutedly a cheap part--from my research Baldwin actually made the Challenger brand for Hi-Value (a SW store chain)). Anyway, thanks a TON for all your help (next time if I have an issue, I'll attach pics).
