Pedals need to be greased every once in a while... Remove end cap/screw/bolt, insert grease gun, inject until it comes out clear on other side. Wipe off excess and the old grease you forced out. Ride another 10k miles. Some pedals (like my speedplay x's) aren't that well sealed and dry out in about 5k. With rain it's even less and I've had to regrease them in as little as 2500 miles. They can go from quiet to squeaky in about 20 minutes and I've been on rides where at the end after 4-5 hours they can be heard from a block away and people might mistake me for a bike abuser.
