That's kind of what I was thinking. The amount of training required to hit your ideal FTP would also be the kind of training to get you to your ideal race weight. So I'd think you would have to take that into account.
Anyways, sounds like the 2 pounds/inch "rule" for climbers. Maybe it's in the ballpark, but it's too general to give you something to shoot for.
So if I get to a weight of my desired weight 144 (currently 151 this morning - yeah I should be 136 as per the 2x formula but that would not happen), that means at my age 44 I can only be at 277.9 watts and goes downhill from there. Sounds about right for me. I am not @ 277 and would be ecstatic if I am. The delta may not be so much but I know the pain involved to get there and the performance gain in terms of speed and climbing ability is not so much and obviously diminishes every year
If I were a bike salesman I could sell a lot of weight weenie gear based on this formula alone to middle age men.
