I am wondering whether a modern road bike is a good choice as a daily commuter. If that was my main use of a bike, I might choose either a touring bike, a road oriented hybrid, a hardtail mountain bike with slicks, or a vintage road bike. Any of those could still be used for 40 to 50 mile rides, and might be sturdier and better suited for commuting.
