Sounds like it's normal. A 105 triple shifter has 4 main positions plus a soft click trim position for the smallest ring. Shifting from the small to the middle ring requires shoving the brake lever to the third main position, don't try to ease it in. If the chain is on the extreme left side of the cassette you can trim back to the second main position to avoid chainrub.
