Shifting up feels much smoother than shifting down (and the chain kinda goes wild for half a second when going from lg -> med -> sml)

Anyways, is there a way for me to verify if the shifting could be smoother, or should I just take it to a local bike shop and ask them to check it out for me...?

Thanks
The shifting action you describe sounds pretty typical and normal. After it changes gear does it grind on the derailer? It's normal for your front derailer to take a half pedal stroke to change because there is only 2 - 4 "ramps" on the chain ring that pull the chain up onto it,,, sounds like you need a very minor fd adjustment, you should be able to do it yourself, refer to sheldon browns site, good luck
