Do you have anything you buy locally, or do you buy it all online? If you need lights, a spare tube, patches, tire levers, a pump, a helmet, bike shorts, a jersey, gloves, or anything of the sort, I'd go to a LBS, pick some of it up, and then tell 'em about the FD.
If you're an actual customer, it wouldn't shock me to have them just fix it and not charge you. If you're a guy who bought a bike online and can't get it working right, you'll definitely get charged. Depending on how much work needs to be done, I'd probably charge you $10. The shop I work in charges $60 for a partial build - imo, that's pretty cheap considering you'll be going downhill fast on this thing relatively unprotected.
When I got started with bikes, every time I couldn't figure something out, I happily went in and paid them to do work - and asked a lot of questions about what they were doing, what was adjusted improperly, etc. You'll learn a lot more that way than googling it or going to parktool.com - trust me, I've been there. Hands on advice from a real wrench beats the heck out of reading something online, and in my opinion, the knowledge was worth way more than the labor being done.
