I dunno. The article caters to the non-cyclist who laughs at men in tights. Lighthearted or in jest, people still laugh at lycra that don't understand why we wear it.
I recently had a little facebook tete a tete with a guy I used to ride motorbikes with after he was making fun of some mamils that rode past his shop. The perception is out there as you well know. If cycling required armor like american football or hockey I'm sure there would be no heckling.
Personally, I feel if you snicker at men in lycra then you have an insecurity. Me being in Canada and not in UK/Europe I can tell you that the "degree of manliness" meter is set pretty high here and in america. the disdain for men in lycra is far worse here.
Yes it is a funny article (I guess), but it derives its humour for the non-cyclist on this attitude that men in lycra are X, Y or Z.
I used to think all these fat guys in spandex were morons until I had a revelation while trying my first cycling shorts. That revelation was - cyclists don't care what you think. I figured out that I don't care what anyone thinks; I'm happily married, with a kid and in better shape than I have been in years.
