You certainly do pay for the Trek name.
Plus, The Trek Warranty.
Plus, the Trek reputation for building great bikes.
I purchased my Trek 1.5 for only $725. (just $25. over OP's limit)
and it was Bicycling Magazines Editor's Choice for '09.
The Trek 1.1 can be found for only $599. a lot of times. And, it only weighs 20lbs.
And, Trek's 1.X Series is considered to be one of the best entry-level bikes they've ever ridden every year since it's introduction.
I'd gladly pay an extra $50. for a ready to ride/LBS built 20lb Trek with a proven track record,
not to mention being fitted at a LBS and having a place to have your warranty serviced locally
if needed instead of having to mail it back to the distributor.
