Thanks Thrifty Bill! I guess the bars are chrome, then. Maybe I'll take them to the LBS this week and try not to be embarrassed asking "uh, is this chrome?" haha! I see that linseed oil is a good choice on both chrome and steel, so I'll give that a shot and see what happens.

I'm still interested in an explanation why clear coats don't inhibit oxidation, if anybody knows.
