Painting a bonded aluminium frame
I scored a Trek 7000 frame at the local dump. Some paint around the areas where the bonded tubing joints are (eg, downtube to headstock) is flaking off. I'm thinking of removing the flaky paint, checking for cracks, then painting over the areas that are bare aluminium. Would paint have any effect on the bonding agents (glues) that are used? I might use hammerite, or maybe just some kind of regular primer/topcoat system like I'd use for painting metal railings. (I'm not fussy at all what it looks like, I just want to prevent corrosion).
I read someplace that these bonded frames have internal lugs, presumably to aid alignment prior to bonding, does anyone have more info about this?
