Bike hats (they're not helmets) have always been cheap junk meant to be a profit item for bike merchants. To think they are getting thinner and cheaper is probably correct. This increases the profit margin and profit is their only reason for being.

If we were truly interested in safety, we'd all wear NASCAR type full face helmets of heavy construction. Those do help in a crash. Not the foam drink cup things all the bikers seem to think they need today. I've never owned a bike hat and never will.
