im not sure how old you are, but i know bones begin to decalcify past a certain age which increases likelihood of bone and joint injuries. just be careful and err on the side of safety over increasing reps/weight.
Split squats are easier to perform than regular squats as well. It is the same as a lunge, but instead of lunging you set your feet apart and then do a squat with dumbells in hand. Make sure to alternate and that the legs are the equal distance apart on both legs. Also make sure to bend the back knee and to not let your front knee pass over your front toe.
