I have thick, multicolor, hip length hair. And NO I don't have to wash it after a ride for it to be fit for public display!!
It's VERY easy ... I shower before I leave for work, I put my hair into one long braid down the middle of my back, and when I arrive at work, I take it out of the braid, shake it out ... and it is good to go.
