I have seen people do week long supported tours on single speeds, mountain bike and cruisers. if he owns a bike he can do it without purchasing a new bike. Now a nice road bike would be a definite plus.

I have done supported tours of similar distances with my Italian racer many times I like a rear rack and trunk bag to hold my medical stuff and food when the blood sugars go too low, and a place to put the rain gear.
