I'm supposed to use grease ! ? ? ? !
I use a clear blue synthetic, waterproof, "Marine" grease. I bought a small tub of it in about 1980 and it is still about 1/3 full. That is 30 years of use on motorcycles and bikes from a single tub. This stuff is identical to Phil grease (as far as I can tell) and it costs a whole lot less.
I also have a tub of wheel bearing grease, but this doesn't typically get used on my bikes, as they do not benefit from/have no need for "high temperature" grease.
