On the sidelines from running while my plantar faciitis heals and decided to turn to the old road bike to maintain my conditioning. Pulled out my 1995 GT Edge road bike that is in very good condition despite it's age - Aluminum frame, Dura Ace components. It's a polished aluminum finish and I noticed that the frame and fork are showing signs of pitting on the metal and other spots on the top tube that look like some type of staining that isn't coming off. The bike is in excellent condition and I don't want to buy a new bike at this time (even though I constantly drool over the Trek catalogs).
I'm thinking about having it refinished to protect the metal from further damage. I'll lose the GT transfer logos, but I'll sacrifice them to protect the metal. Are there places that I need to look for to have my bike refinished and does anyone have an approx. idea on the cost of refinishing?
I know that I'll have to take it to my bike shop to have it all stripped and then reassembled.
I'm definitely wanting to do the fork. Maybe the seatpost and possibly the crank arms (they also show signs of pitting). I'll probably hold off until the cold months when It's too cold to ride outside.
Thanks for any leads.
