The 14 guage with the 17 guage middle section to me would seem better only becasue it has a larger ends and therefore more threaded area to grip into the nipple.
Pick the gauge that matches the holes in your hub. The fit should be snug. Too small a gauge will wear a notch in the hub holes, possibly causing failure of the hub flange.
