You can adjust the tension on the SPD pedals quite easily - instructions here - adjusting the spring force of the binding. Make sure you keep the tension equal on the front and back of each pedal, otherwise they're an absolute nightmare!

I had a pair of SPD pedals a while back (M515). Never could get them to release smoothly and consistently. Finally gave up and bought some Crank Brothers Egg Beaters... never looked back.
