One of the (many) troubles with tunnels is the amount of debris that gathers on the side, I try and avoid that.Only thing worse than riding in a tunnel is fixing a flat in one.

Coasting is right that the riders should have slowed and ridden behind the car.

If the tunnel is many KM long then finding a spot for built up traffic to pass would be good manners if possible.
