Stories like this and others make me wonder why they make these things out of thin uncovered metal. You think for $20 they could put on something like a dog tag silencer.

Overall, they seem like overkill unless you have a condition or allergy that an EMT absolutely has to know about. A laminated card in the jersey pocket and saddle bag seems like it should be sufficient. I'd rather take the remote risk of having a delay in my family being contacted after a serious crash over the larger risk of being impaled or garroted in a "mild" crash.
