I don't get the "less to pack" part or the implication that wool lasts longer. In my experience synthetics are lighter, last longer, dry faster, and are more comfortable. I wore wool for canoeing, kayaking, and backpacking before synthetics became popular for those uses and was really happy when synthetic garments suited for outdoorsy usage became available.

As far as the odor resistant claim, I have not really found that to be the case either, maybe I have weird body chemistry, but my smartwool socks stink way worse than my synthetic ones, to the extent that I now leave the wool socks home. Granted a few of my synthetic garments tent to stink after multiple days wear but others don't seem to, I just leave the ones that do at home.
