How about a couple of inches of those perforated steel straps used for hanging air ducts and pipes from ceilings? If you tear one of those it'll definitely be something going on with your hub.

I'd be quite wary of that. It'll put a nasty stress riser on the chainstay, and I've bent a couple of those over the years.
