I have a Trek 7500FX I use for commuting and riding when I think the weather might get bad. I love it. It's a bit over your stated range ($599) but I found it to be an extremely fun bike to ride. I've done several 30 mile rides on it with no ill effects. I also agree that suspension is not needed on the road. I put a little better seat on mine and I think it's great!
