As the OP said, once you have a car, everything becomes expensive. I agree. I found that having a car made life quite expensive and things like food and entertainment had to be sacrificed. Also, with my social life suffering because of the lack of cash, thanks to the car, credit cards became necessary. I can't believe my first 30 years of this life were wasted trying to live a motorized life.
