I taught myself how to ride when I was 7.

I just picked a quiet street and spent a couple of hours to do it.

From then on, I was out on the streets by myself, sometimes, with a friend. Mom never worried.

That was back in the day when she would make us go out and play and just blow a whistle to get us to return home for dinner.

When I taught my kids, I just picked a quiet street and helped them a bit, but just basically watched them figure it out.

When they would ride to school, I used to go along and mostly did the same. Just stay back and watch if something was developing that looked like trouble.

When I explained to them how traffic worked, and what to look for, and I did it before they got on their bikes, so they knew what to expect.
