My stumpjumper is about ten years younger than yours, but I can tell you that mine came with 7sp indexed shifting and cantilever brakes (and 26" wheels, FWIW). Did yours have the triangular handlebars on it? I think that's what it might have come with originally. I have also seen one stumpjumper that was converted to a SS before, with a chain tensioner. It looks pretty slick.
