Skill level includes beginning pack riders through very experienced racers. Safer than the rose bowl ride because once people are dropped they generally stay dropped.

If you aren't very experienced in big pack rides, find someone who looks smooth and stay on their wheel. If you're not really fit, stay out of the wind. There are a lot of short or shallow grades after about the halfway point and they don't seem like much until you hit them in a fast moving pack.
